Newport harriers took the veterenne women's team prize in the Welsh Cross Country Relay Championships at Heath Park, Cardiff on Sunday 11th April. The team of Sally Lynch, Carole Fereday and Anne Saxena finished well ahead of the other over 35 women's teams as yet another Welsh title was annexed by the clubs female athletes.
The event was run in conjunction with the Mickey Morris Cross Country Relays (Mickey Morris was a promising athlete, a Welsh and British international who died of a viral complaint before achieving his full potential). Whilst conceding best to young runners in the senior women's race, Newport's veterenne women's team headed their age group throughout the race. In fact there was little to choose between the clubs 3 runners as they carved out an emphatic victory.
Having failed to field a team last year in the senior mens event Newport Harriers showed a dramatic turnabout field 3 senior mens teams and one veteran mens team. There was a welcome return to competition for Marcus Jenkins. Jenkins who has been unfortunate with injuries over the past year led a competitive and young Newport Harriers team to 12th place overall in a strong field. The event was always going to be tough for Newport's young squad, but they acquitted themselves admirably. Jenkins (20m 45s) rant the first leg handing over to Tome Cordy, an outstanding 800m prospect, who ran 22m 26s. Mark Goodger returned from university in Bath to contribute a 21m 39sa third leg with James Nasrat (an under 17 year old) completing the team in 22m 05s. The 'B' team was not that far behind with Andrew Sims 21m 09s spearheading their challenge. He was supported by Paul Young 233m33s Malcolm Medhurst 23m 31s and Andrew Lott 24m 38s. Newport also had a 'C' team competing Dave Cawley , Dave Lewis and Nick Morgan all running well and a veteran men's team consisting of Ian Haley, Paul Day, Mike Adams and Ken Goodger
