Newport Harriers Athletic Club Women's team goes from strength to strength. And on Saturday they again demonstrated that they are at the pinnacle of Welsh athletics when despite losing Welsh international athletes Kath Sage (injury) and Donna Porazinski (representing Wales at Loughborough) the destroyed the opposition from Swansea; Cardiff; Yate; Bristol; Brecon & Carmarthen.

The club scored solidly throughout with Nicky Haines-Jones (3000 metres) producing a quite classy run, to beat Ceri Grech-Thomas of Cardiff. Earlier in the afternoon Kirsten Martin comfortably won the 400 metres. Alex Gladwyn doubled the 100 metre and 200 metre races picking up 3rd place in the short sprint and going one better with second in the longer race.

Nicky Whitton easily won the pole vault and there were a pair of 3rd places for Liz Callicott in the sprint hurdles and the 400 metre hurdles, whilst Ros Cavacuitti, Amy Prothero and Alice Simmons picked up 2nd places in the high jump, long jump and hammer respectively, and Sharon Fletcher was narrowly beaten into 3rd place in the shot. Newport were so far ahead after their 2nd place in the 4*100 metre relay that they decided not to contest the 4*400 metre event.

Whilst the women's team were taking the opposition apart Newport's men's team were struggling to stay on terms with the opposition in the Gold cup on the same day. The bright spots of the afternoon were Tom Cordy's win, beating Olympic athlete Christian Stevenson, in the 800 metres and Steve Davies' 2nd place, smashing his previous personal best in the 1500 metres.

The team were hit by late withdrawals and as a result were never on terms with the opposition finishing 6th just behind Yate and Bristol but comfortably ahead of Llanelli.
