Newport Harrier Mark Goodger smashed his personal best at 800 meters in Glasgow on the weekend, recording a time of 1 minute 51.51 seconds in finishing 6th in the final of the British Universities Championships.
The 22 year-old middle distance
runner was lucky to stay on his feet in the heat as there was a clash on the
first bend in which he was almost brought down.
He qualified for the semi-final in 3rd place with a time of
1m57.2s. Mark then recorded a new
personal best in the semi final of 1m52.35s, more than 2 seconds faster than his
previous fastest. He surprised even
himself in the final by bettering the semi-final time by more than 8 tenths of a
second.
In the same meeting former
Newport Harrier James Hillier, (Currently studying and competing in the
midlands) won the 400 meter Hurdles title beating British international Matt
Douglas. Hillier's winning time was
50.9 seconds.
