Newport Harriers Gwent League

The 2001/2002 Gwent League round 3

The 3rd round of the Gwent League was held at Newbridge Fields in Bridgend on 2nd December.

As usual Paul Day was the first senior (well veteran as well) home in 105th place, he was followed home by another vet, Steve Lockwood in 179th place and then Gareth Jones in 220th. Dave Lewis was the first and only real senior in 221st right on Gareth's shoulder (Dave you let Gareth beat you again!). Ken Goodger was last Harrier home in 282nd. This was a better showing than round 2, and put the team of mostly veterans in 37th place, but we are still in 5th place in Division 4, positions are starting to look set now.

In the Veteran's over 40 category, Paul was a much improved 49th, Steve was 93rd also a big improvement, Gareth was slightly up in 127th and Ken also improved to 173rd. This moved the team up to 25th on the day, our best yet, and overall the vets team is 30th. The vet 50's say Paul in 12th place and Gareth in 37th which put the team in joint 11th and 12th overall.

In the Junior men's race James Nasrat found it a bit tougher going this time, only managing to finish 5th, whereas Steve Davies improved to 9th place, Gareth Fereday was next in 17th, and Paul Jones in 21st. Carl McEwan made a welcome return to the Cross Country finishing in 31st. James is 5th overall with Steve in 6th, the team was 3rd on the day and is lying in 4th overall, but it's close.

In the Under 17's Gareth Day was the only Harries and managed an excellent 7th, the team was 9th and has slipped to 11th spot overall. In the Novices race, N. Johnson was 4th and M Williams 30th all of which leaves N. Johnson 2nd by a point, and Newport in 5th overall.

The Senior Ladies were without Nikki Haines-Jones this time, which left the others to cover, which they did well. Anne Saxena finished in 18th, Vickki Parnell was 27th just ahead of Carol Fereday in 28th, C. Palmer was 111th, and Phillipa Reilly was 125th. The team was 7th on the day which drops them one place to 5th in the top division.

The veterenes had Anne in 10th, Carol in 17th and C Palmer in75th with Phillipa in 88th. The ladies Vet 35 tem was 9th keeping them in 4th spot overall. The vet 45 race saw Anne in 3rd place and Carol 5th with C Palmer in 33rd, placing the team in an excellent 2nd place on the day, moving them up to 3rd overall. Carol won the vet 50 category and moved up to 6th overall.

At Under 15's, L. Hastings was the first of out runners home in 41st place, followed by R Lloyd in 47th and R hodges in 52nd. The close grouping helped place the team 17th on the day, and 11th overall.

Zoe Llewellyn finished in 8th spot in the under 13 girls race and was again our only entrant, the small team was 9th on the day and is 11th overall. Whilst in the Novices race, C. Cardwell was 17th making the team 14th and leaving them in 7th overall.
