Newport Harriers joint men and Women's team competed on Sunday 21st July at the Northwood Stadium in Stoke on Trent in the Semi-Final of the British League Cup.
The Harriers finished 5th , missing a top two placing that would have taken them to the final, but there were many outstanding individual performances on the day.
Women's team captain, Kath Sage led by example, winning the 800m in 2:13.1, finishing 4th in the 200m in a season's best of 25.4, then with Georgie Parnell, Sarah Newman and Kirsten Martin taking runners up spot in the 4x400m relay. Kirsten Martin was just beaten into second place in the individual 400m, the same position occupied by Lara Richards in the Long Jump. Georgie Parnell showed a promising return to form in the 1500m, finishing 4th in a seasons best of 4:57.4.
For the men, Paul Jones recorded two personal bests, finishing fourth in the 400m Hurdles in 58.7 and filling the same position in the 110mh Hurdles in 18.3. Other pb's came from Liam Collins with 11.5 in the 100m and Carl McEwan in the 200m in 22.5 Other notable results came from James Nasrat, with and excellent 3rd in the 400m and Gareth Felkin with 4th in the Javelin. The best in the men's match was saved until last however, when Mark Goodger, Liam Collins, Carl McEwan and James Nasrat produced a stunning victory in the 4x400m relay.
Club Chairman Brian Hancock said, "There was a very young team competing in this match, and they have acquitted themselves very well. Matches like this are extremely important to the future of Newport Harriers, as our athletes have the opportunity to compete against some of the best athletes in the country, which is just what they need to help them progress,"
