Newport HarriersWelsh Veterans League |
This years Vets league started at the usual venue, Neath, in the usual way. This time we had a much larger team, but we were still unable to persuade anyone to do the 400m, I can't think why. Anyway we started with a win in the first event contested, Keith won the high jump despite being unable to remember where his run up started from. Glyn provided able support in the over 50's, surprising himself and everyone else who was watching by clearing 1.25m.
Meanwhile, new recruit Steve Lockwood was battling away for a creditable 5th place in the 1500m in 5:20.2, no one else would do it so Steve was our only competitor. The 200m races were definitely our strong event, Huw made a welcome return to the Vet's side in the M40 A race, taking a creditable 2nd place in 26.7 behind Adam from Brecon, then Barry stunned us all with a very determined piece of sprinting, winning the B race by a fair old margin (margin's are always old in the vets league). In the Over 50's race, Glyn was feeling the 10 pints from the weekend and had to battle hard against Cardiff's Brian, but he eventually won by some 5 meters. Chris Power, new to the team, took the B race in determined style, Paul from Port Talbot pushed him all the way to the line in the evening's closest, and most hotly supported finish. Chris was unable to re-produce this form in the Long Jump, and refused to admit he had only jumped 3.25m, and made me promise not to publish it on the web site (sorry Chris :-). Keith did win the M40 long jump, after managing to work out what 'run up' actually meant.
The Relay was all over at the gun (well the whistle anyway), Barry blew them away at the start, handing over to Glyn about 5 meters up. Needless to say Glyn put another 20 meters on that, handing onto Keith who extended the lead to over 40 meters, which Huw pushed up to nearly 60 meters as he crossed the line despite the near static change over. Other events were still continuing, the shot was a late finisher for Glyn and Chris, as was the long jump, Keith had shot his bolt by then and should have gone home early,
