Welsh Senior League Round 3 Divisions 1 & 3

Division 1 Wrexham 3rd August

Newport Harriers were in Wrexham for the third round of the Welsh Senior League.

In the men's section, there were again some excellent performances. Matthew Lewis, on his debut for the team, produced a superb PB when winning the 400mB, directly after team mate James Nasrat (stepping down from 800m for the day) had convincingly won the A race. Carl McEwan took victory in the 100mA and was 2nd in the 200m. Paul Jones won the 400m hurdles A and finished 2nd in the 110m hurdles A. Performance of the day came from the 4x400m relay of Liam Collins, Paul Jones, Carl McEwan and James Nasrat who were not only comfortable winners, but came up only 0.4 seconds short of the league record. Mark Goodger was 2nd in the 800mA and Team Manager Dave Lewis was 3rd in the B and 3rd in the 3000m B, where Steve Davies was2nd in the A.

On the field, high jumper Rhys Llyod continues to make progress, finishing 4th on this occasion. Gareth Felkin is extremely consistent in the javelin, and veteran Glyn Sutton continues to produce superb performances in the Pole Vault.

Brian Hancock, club chairman said, "In previous seasons we have struggled a bit in this league. We are confident however, that with the growing strength of the men's side, and plenty of young female athletes coming up through our junior ranks, we will challenge for the league title within the next couple of seasons."

With only two women available for the team, because of the UK women's league on the next day, the club was always going to struggle against the leagues top teams. On the day, Rachel Stannard looked to be coming back to her best form, with a 2nd place in the sprint hurdles , and a promising 3rd in the 100m. Sam Adams on her debut produced some good solid performances in the shot, discus and javelin.

Division 3 Barry 4th August

Seven Newport Harriers made the trip to Jenner Park Barry for a Division 3 match on Sunday 4th August. Two members Daniel Wilson and Lisa Boswell made their debuts in this League, whilst Alex Leach was in his second senior match. The squad was led by Team Managers Huw Roberts and Phillippa Reilly, both leading by example, the other squad members were Emma Plow, Malcolm Medhurst and Nick Morgan. The previous day Saturday two young members of the Harriers returned excellent results from Wrexham. 15 year old Matthew Lewis competed in his first Senior 400m and ran a P.B in 51.5 seconds. Meanwhile Samantha Adams returned figures of Shot 7.40m, Javelin 17.74m and discus 16.64m excellent senior debuts for both athletes.


The results in Barry were as impressive:
