UK Women’s League Newport 3rd August 2003

The final round of the UK Women's league was held in glorious sunshine at Spytty on August3rd. Going into the match Liverpool were holding a significant lead but had been unable to raise a full team for the day. Would the local teams be able to take advantage as those at the top slipped. The early events went Newport's way, with superb wins in the 400m Hurdles for Donna Porazinski and a double for Georgie Parnell and Clair Martin in the 800m. Amy  Prothero pressed home the advantage winning the B long jump and Clair Martin took the another of her wins in the 3000m. Swansea were making a much better showing as well and soon overtook Newham and Essex for 2nd. Unfortunately as the day wore on we slipped to an eventual 4th place despite further wins for Claire in the 1500m and strong showing in the relays.

The Javelin held up the last event, which saw only a 7.5 points separating the top two, Swansea and Newham. Newham won the 4x400 but Swansea took second and held on for the win. The league positions were even closer, Newham managed to overtake Liverpool for the title, whilst Swansea sneaked 3rd by 1 match point from City of Norwich. We finished a creditable5th in our first year in division 3. Basingstoke and Kingston-Upon-Hull are relegated.
