Newport Harriers |
Fine autumnal weather marked the start of the cross country season at Newbridge Fields in Bridgend. Newport Harriers have had significant success in recent years in the Gwent Cross Country League, winning promotion in successive seasons from Division 4 to Division 2, so it was disappointing to find us bottom of our division after the first meeting, despite creditable individual performances.
Owolabi Adebiyi led the Harriers home in his cross country debut finishing 145th. Owolabi has untapped potential and is expected to finish in the top 100 as the season progresses. Hopefully he will remember to bring his club vest for the next meeting.
Dave Proffitt has returned to team competition after a gap of some years. He proved his worth on the track in the Welsh Masters League and is doing likewise on the country, scoring valuable points in 209th position. Regulars Darryn McAtee and Gareth Jones finished 155th and 233rd respectively.
As a team, the Harriers suffered from a lean turnout and from the withdrawal of Dave Shroll during the race. The competition allows a team of eight with the top 5 scoring, so with only four scoring athletes we were bound to struggle. However, stronger turnouts are anticipated in subsequent races (i.e. people will be nagged to run) and we are confident that Newport will consolidate its status in Division 2.
