Newport Harriers |
Newport Harriers senior men braved the stinking, muddy, sewage-infested fields of Leckwith to complete a great team effort that saw them rise two places from bottom of the table and out of the relegation zone.
Gareth Jones ended the race cut and bloodied in 285th position. He immediately muttered something about early retirement, although reliable sources have witnessed Gareth in training since. Don’t retire Gareth – your club needs you.
Steve Berney made his Gwent Cross Country debut and was nursed around the course by old head Dave Proffitt, finishing 273rd and 274th respectively. There was more team co-operation further ahead where, with two laps completed, Owolabi Adebiyi, Malcolm Medhurst and Darryn McAtee had created a solid band of black and amber. Darryn just about held form to finish 175th, Malcolm ran even-paced in 165th position, while Owolabi advanced to 156th place.
The key to team success on the day was a full complement of scoring athletes for the Harriers, unlike the first League race at Bridgend. The team effort extended to the crowd where Ivor Caldwell, a member of the successful promotion team of the past two seasons, cheered us on. Ivor is currently injured but we can’t wait to see him back in action in a Newport vest.
