Newport Harriers |
Newport Harriers put in a solid performance that maintained their position outside the relegation zone.
Sprint specialist and Wales Vets international John Watkins stepped up several distances to complete his first cross country since high school. It did not help that he arrived five minutes after the race had started and worked hard to overtake competitors to advance to 287th.
Steve Berney, Dave Proffitt and Gareth Jones finished 241st, 233rd and 231st respectively to lay the basis for a respectable team performance. Darryn McAtee and Owolabi Adebiyi secured the big points in 159th and 119th positions. Owolabi showed increased confidence to push on ahead and that top 100 finish beckons.
In Division 2, Newport dropped behind Chepstow but leapfrogged over Pembrokeshire to stay in 10th place. With the cumulative points totals tight amongst the bottom four, the key to ‘survival’ is a full scoring turnout. So far, individual efforts and a keen team spirit are being rewarded.
