Newport Harriers Senior Men’s Report

Newport Harriers were successful in their objective of avoiding relegation to Division 3 of the Gwent League. On a flat, fast course in sunny but windy conditions, Newport’s efforts throughout the season were rewarded as they held on to Division 2 status by 107 points.

Backbone of the team were Darryn McAtee, Gareth Jones and Dave Proffitt, the three athletes who competed in all five of the Gwent League matches. Darryn McAtee led the team home in 106th position. Darryn’s overall League position was 72nd from over 400 competitors.

Gareth Jones was, as ever, immense in the solidity of his performance in 176th place. Dave Proffitt, fighting off a cold throughout the week, finished strongly in 203rd position.

The team was buttressed on the day by the return of Steve Wadley following fitness problems. This was Steve’s first cross-country outing of the season and he scored valuable points finishing 156th.

The big team news was that an understrength Newport dropped a place but remained out of the bottom two relegation positions. So congratulations to Saturday’s runners but also to all of the other athletes who have represented the Harriers during the season.
