Welsh Junior League Cup Final 2004

New Newport Harrier Club Records for Bath, Leach, Trigg and Wilson Despite having a seriously depleted team at the Welsh Junior Athletics Cup Final, Newport Harriers gave a superb performance finishing 5th overall narrowly missing 4th spot by just 5 match points. This competition, the highlight of the Club competition in Wales, saw the Harriers climb up the table to rank just below Carmarthen and Cardiff as leading clubs in South Wales. Four athletes managed the distinction of setting new Club records in the process. Firstly at the start of competition in the hammer cage, Alex Leach from Malpas, an 18 year old student from Cross Keys College and formally of Bettws High took his Under 20 men’s Club hammer record to 40.64m. Seconds later Lucy Bath a 13 year old pupil of Bettws High took her U15 girls hammer record to 24.26m. The Bettws High connection was maintained later in the day as Kevin Trigg another 13 year old from the school, in this his debut year, set new figures in the U13 boys javelin event sending the 200g spear out to 31.68m. The throwers continued their success as Rhydian Wilson another U13 debutante took the U13 boys discus record which had stood for 31 years apart with a magnificent throw of 28.59m.
