The Championships were held at Spytty Stadium Newport and at times suspended due
to a violent thunderstorm. After the storm had passed some of the athletic
performances became electric in their own right. Team Gwent, comprised of
athletes from Newport Harriers were in good form and three performances stood
out. Nicholas Johnson under 15 boy ran a superb 800m in 2 minutes 7.07 seconds
to set a new championship record and was fractionally outside the Welsh under 15
boys outdoor 800m record with the time. Alex Leach in his final year in this
competition successfully defended his throws titles that he has won since being
a 2nd year under 15 boy. The Gwent Group organisers Dave and Lyn Powe had plenty
to smile about as the Under 15 girls squad won the Phyl Griffiths Cup for the
first time in many years. A total of 33 medals were won by Team Gwent (Newport
Harriers) 10 Gold, 12 Silver and 11 Bronze.
