Newport Harriers
|
This was the last race of the season and Singleton Park proved, once again, to be a hilly, demanding course. Newport Harriers were up to the task, however, making a fine effort that saw them advance one place in Division 2.
The last time Newport had four in the first 100 Steve Jones was running for the club. Leading the charge in 2006 were Gareth Fereday and Chris Oxley in 29th and 30th position respectively. This was a personal battle with Chris leading for three-and-three-quarter laps before Gareth’s stamina and strength paid off in the final stretch. (Don’t worry Chris, the smart money is on you to beat Gareth on the track).
Darryn McAtee achieved his highest ever finish in 67th and Malcolm Medhurst completed the team in 85th place.
Chris and Darryn were the Harriers’ two ever-presents this season. Chris finished 21st overall in the individual league competition and Darryn finished 54th. In the Male 40 Veterans category Darryn was a creditable 15th.
Last year’s relegation worries were definitely a thing of the past
for Newport in Gwent League Division 2. We finished a fantastic fifth
place despite the fact that we up against the full might of Cardiff AAC
(Richard Gardiner, Jimmy Watkins et al) and a rejuvenated Lliswerry
Runners (Colin Bradley et al). We pipped Chepstow by five points, so
every point counted and it’s congratulations to everyone who ran for
Newport Harriers this season.
