Newport Harriers |
Newport Harriers travelled to Hereford last Saturday for their final Midland
league division five match of the season.
Having won the first three
matches and already assured of promotion, the club, despite being low on
numbers, were hoping to end their season with some style. In the event, the
Harriers found themselves in one of their strangest of matches. Throughout the
day, Hereford and Banbury were vying for the lead with Newport hanging on in
third, but never more than fifteen points behind the leaders.
Newport had not been in the lead at all, when with the last event, the discus, Alex Leach launched a throw which secured an A string victory, and brought Newport tantalisingly close to the top. The very last throw of the competition saw brother Jason gain a Pb in the B event, edge into third place, and secure a most unlikely victory for the Harriers by one single point. This match winning throw ended an excellent day for Jason as he had already recorded Pb’s in the Hammer and the Shot.
Another of Newport’s athletes to make a huge impression was evergreen super-vet Glyn Sutton, who broke the current Welsh Masters records in the 100m and the Pole Vault as he took a pair of second places.
Simon Talbot won the 200m, Gareth Day took the High Jump and Alex Leach added the Shot to his discus victory. Darryn McAtee won a fine tactical battle in the B 800, and there was a brace of second places for Malcolm Medhurst in the B 400 and B Triple Jump whilst both relay squads also finished second.
Team Manager Tony Lewis commented later, “I was unable to attend this final fixture, so I must commend acting Team Manager Keith Powell on an excellent job. We had a couple of very late withdrawals and Keith had to re-jig the team which he did magnificently. We have been hard pressed by both Banbury and Hereford all season, so I congratulate all the members of the team for their great performances and some marvellously entertaining athletics. We can now look forward to even stiffer competition in division four next season.”
