Harrier’s Save Best until Last

Going into their last UK Women’s League match of the season, Newport Harriers were laying in overall sixth place of the eight competing teams, just two points clear of the relegation zone. Keen to stay clear of the drop, the club in fact managed to produce their best finish of the season after a string of excellent individual performances. From very early on, Cardiff showed that their position at the top of the division was well merited as they dominated the early events, with Havering Mayesbrook looking like the only team who could challenge them. Ashford and Border Harriers gradually fell out of contention, leaving Newham & Essex Beagles, Newport, Milton Keynes and Aldershot to scrap it out for third. By the mid-point of the match, Newport had edged into third place ahead of Milton Keynes. As the day went on, Newport strengthened their position, and finally finished twenty five points clear in an excellent third place, which gave them an overall fifth place finish in the division, and left them well clear of the relegation zone.
