Welsh Masters League 3rd May Neath

The first round was held at Neath again, as tradition would have it anyway. After previous visits to the Neath Valley for such events we were fully expecting rain, hail or even Hurricanes, such has been the weather at this venue in May. Were were not fully disappointed although the rain was brief. The event itself was another great start for Newport who are the current League Champions, and going for a hat trick.

The match started well with Steve and Brett winning the M40 400m and in the 50's John took 2nd whilst Geoff romped home first in the B string. Meanwhile the hammer was progressing without any serious injuries. The high Jump was brief and we won the M40 and M50 A strings with tactical jumps from Keith and Geoff, this promoted Glyn to joint 2nd in the B for the over 50's - not really his main event. So on to the 100 sprints where we dominated again, Steve B won a very close finish in the A race, but Brett was able to just canter home first in the B string, covering for Keith who was now injured (?). John lost out in the M50's now that Cardiff's Brian Williamson was fit again, Geoff also stormed home for another win in the B string.

At this time no-one had been killed in the hammer, so it must have been going well. Darryn and Malcolm had a real battle in the 300m and just when it looked like Malcolm had the advantage Darryn took him back and stormed away. Dave Proffit was also able to battle home in 5th in the Over 50's as the officials made a right mare of the results. With the shot completed and Steve and Darryn picking up useful points in the 40's and Geoff and Glyn doing even better in the 50's - almost looked like they knew what they were doing too, we came to the relays.

To say there was a grudge match would be over stating things, but the survivors of the earlier hammer contest lined up for Newport A and B - only one would score, who would it be, did anyone else care? Luckily embarrassment was spared and A beat B.

Just deserts were gained in a resounding victory on the night, if we can keep it up we should do well, but look out for that hammer contest.
