Newport Harriers |
Newport Harriers Masters maintained their momentum in the Welsh Masters League, comfortably winning the match and extending their lead over nearest rivals Rhondda and Cardiff.
Newport dominated the 200m, gaining three wins courtesy of Steve Wadley, Steve Berney and Glyn Sutton (is he the fastest 60-year-old in the world?). John Watkins came second in the M50 B race, losing out again to his Cardiff rival Brian Williamson. Admittedly John’s warm-up consisted solely of being stuck in traffic at the Coldra roundabout, but then isn’t that his usual warm-up routine?
The most exciting race of the evening was the M40 800m. In a high quality field, 0.2 seconds separated the first three finishers. Malcolm Medhurst led for most of the race but Brett Davies won with a last second dip on the line. Malcolm finished third in the race but could content himself with being the B winner. In the M50 800m, cross-country regular Gareth Jones marked his return to the track with a solid third position.
Darryn McAtee displayed a devastating sprint finish to win the 1500m, with Colin Bradley producing another steadfast run to come second in the B race. Stepping up a few distances, John Watkins came a good second in the M50 1500m. Dave Proffitt completed the middle-distance honours, gaining two second places in the 800m and 1500m.
Newport’s men rounded off a successful evening on the track in the medley relay, demonstrating their strength in depth and overall quality with A and B teams coasting home in first and second position.
In the field events Keith Powell was outstanding, winning the pole vault and B triple jump and coming second in the discus and B javelin. Keith scored more points on the night than any other individual.
The points continued to accumulate in the field events. Glyn won the M50 pole vault, while Steve Wadley and Malcolm scored in second place in the discus, javelin and triple jump.
John Watkins’ string of second places was maintained in the M50 triple jump (where he was relegated to B competitor behind Dave Proffitt), although his momentum finally flagged in the discus where he failed to register a throw. It looks as though we will have to promote him to the A relay squad for John to register a win this season.
A special mention to Dave Proffitt who competed in all sorts of events, scored loads of points (a potential victor ludorum winner), and capped his night with a Personal Best in the triple jump.
Constituting a team of one, Anne Saxena graced the track in the Over 50s Ladies, completing a double victory in the 800m and 1500m. This is Newport Ladies Masters best result in years, principally because we haven’t produced a Ladies Masters team for years.
