Newport Harriers |
Newport Harriers paraded eight gold medallists from the previous month’s Welsh Masters Championships as their dominance of the Welsh Masters League continued unabated.
Sprint sensation Steve Berney continued to improve, clocking his fastest 200m time of the season as he edged towards breaking the 26 second barrier. The official result recorded Steve Wadley second in the B race, even though winner Nigel Greenaway of Swansea is a pre-vet. Was this a cynical ploy to take points off Newport, or did Mary just make a mistake? Glyn Sutton cruised to victory in the M50 200m, while John Watkins’ used his strength to hold off Cardiff’s Stuart Powell in the B race.
In an 800m full of incident, pacemaker Sean Price of Rhondda stepped off the track after 200m. This left Brett Davis exposed in front with Sean’s team mate Bilal Namani lurking dangerously in second place. Was this a cynical race plan by Rhondda to take points off Newport? Rounding the final bend Bil began his attack, but Brett dug deep and produced three kicks in the home straight to earn a narrow victory. Steve Wadley and John Watkins each gained their second track win of the night in the M40 B and M50 A respectively.
In the 3000m Darryn McAtee kicked with 300m to go for a comfortable victory. Malcolm Medhurst was third overall but ensured maximum points as the B winner. Dave Proffitt, nursing an achilles strain, gathered good points in third place in the M50 race.
In the field events Keith Powell was once again outstanding, maintaining his momentum towards the overall victor ludorum league title as he recorded victories in the triple jump, high jump and javelin. Steve Wadley was excellent support, winning the B triple jump and taking second in the B high jump. Steve completed a busy evening with a Personal Best in the hammer as he took second place behind Rhondda’s throws maestro Glyn Pugh. In the javelin Keith was under pressure from Steve Berney but established a 12cm margin as Newport recorded another A and B victory.
M50 athletes Glyn Sutton and John Watkins demonstrated their versatility as they covered all four field events. Although recording no wins (what, no pole vault!), they earned a string of points with John throwing a Personal Best in the hammer.
The evening was capped with a first and second in the 4 x 100m relay. Glyn
Sutton switched from A to B squad to even things up and gobbled up Darryn’s lead
on the second leg, but Brett and Keith ensured there were no blushes for the A
squad as their superior speed and dubious baton changeover secured victory.
