Harriers come so close

MIDLAND MEN’S LEAGUE DIVISION FOUR

In their recent final Midland Men’s League division four match in Nuneaton, Newport Harrier’s senior men’s team almost pulled off an amazing third consecutive year of promotion.

Going in to the match, the Harriers were lying in overall third place, needing to secure a good margin of victory over either Banbury or Gloucester to snatch a promotion place. During the match Banbury fought their way into an unassailable lead, leaving Newport and Gloucester battling for the second promotion spot. Although Newport did succeed in beating Gloucester, they could not quite produce a big enough margin of victory, seeing Banbury and Gloucester advance to division three, leaving Newport in the final position of overall third.

Team Manager Tony Lewis said after the match, “We very much saw this as a season of consolidation after two years of promotion and it was rather a pleasant surprise to find ourselves in with an outside chance of going up. We have blooded quite a few of our younger athletes this season, and can now look forward to having a good blend of youth and experience next season, when I am sure we will mount a real challenge to get in to division three.”

There were some very good individual results on the day with multi-eventer Craig Moulton continuing his rich vein of form, winning the 110mh and the Pole Vault B as well as taking a fine second in the Javelin and the 400h B. Nick Morgan won the Long Jump B and there was an excellent win in the Javelin B for Lawrence Moore who also placed third in the Discus B. Keith Powell was second in the Pole Vault A, while Tom Kivell showed huge promise on his debut finishing third in the Long Jump and second in the Triple Jump. Although not yet back to full fitness, Dave Goodger showed he has lost none of his hurdling ability as he recorded a good second place in the 400mh.
