HARRIERS HANGING ON

Newport Harriers Women’s teams future in division three of the UK women’s league is now firmly in their own hands. After finishing sixth last Sunday on their visit to Coventry for the second of their three matches, the team are lying overall sixth, just above the relegation zone. Quite simply, the team must ensure that they finish above Norwich, Aldershot Farnham and District and Coventry to ensure their survival.

Team manager Audrey Bright said, “We have yet to field anything like a full strength team this season, so our results are not really a reflection of how good the team actually is. I am hopeful that we will be much stronger in the final fixture and survive in division three.”

Outstanding performance of the day for Newport came very early on, when Lisa Boswell launched an impressive 32.48 hammer throw, to take an excellent fourth place in the competition, but more importantly for Lisa, was the shattering of the Newport club record for Junior Women. Lisa also finished third in the Shot put B competition. There were also a good performances in the high jump, as Lara Richards finished a fine second in the A and Kathryn Davies won the B. Kathryn also took second in the 400hB and third in the 100hB. The 4 x 400 relay also figured in an exciting finale to the match, crossing the line in third place just easing out division champions elect, Belgrave.

Audrey Bright said later, “We can’t be disappointed with the result, when the whole team has battled so hard on the day. However, when you consider that as many as twelve of our senior team were unavailable for one reason or another, you realise how much of a force we should really be in this competition. It is important that we survive at this level, as outside of championships, this is about the best level of competition available. Our athletes have always gained valuable experience from competing in this league.”

The team travel to London for their final match on Sunday the 6th of August.
