Disappointment for HARRIERS

.The Sutton Arena in London was the venue for the last match in UK women’s league division three.

Newport, after a titanic battle with Norwich, found themselves twelve and half points adrift, and in seventh place in the match, and seventh overall in the division, thus being relegated for the first time ever in this league. They will now compete in division four next season.

After the match, team manager Audrey Bright said, “We are obviously disappointed to be relegated, but in view of the injuries and non-availabilities we have suffered this season it is hardly surprising. Normally our strength in depth would have seen us through, but this time even we have not been able to carry it off.”

Despite the disappointment there were some excellent individual results for the club, most notably was Lara Richards win in the High Jump B and her excellent second place in the Triple Jump and fourth place in the Long Jump. In only her second season of senior competition, Lisa Boswell continues to improve and impress in the throws. Lisa was second in the Javelin B, fourth in Shot B and sixth in the Hammer with one of her seasons best throws. Kathryn Davies also showed what a valuable recruit she is, by taking second in the 400mh, and along with Becky Williams, Rhianne Jones and Zoe Llewellyn finished second in what is always a Harriers strength, the 4 x 400 relay.

With several promising younger athletes coming up through the ranks, and many club stalwarts sure to be back in competitive form next season, the club should be in an excellent position to challenge for a quick return to the third division.
