South Wales Masters League Cardiff June 7th

Newport took a scratch side to the second Masters League meeting – Glyn Sutton, Steve Berney, Geoff Miller and Carole Fereday were all missing – but still secured a healthy victory over main challengers Rhondda.

Male 50s

The two busiest men on the night were John Watkins and Dave Proffitt, who between them covered 10 events, gaining four 1st/2nd places. They kick-started Newport’s points tally in the 800m, with John 2nd in the A race and Dave winning the B race. John cruised to victory in the 200m while Dave picked up a tough 2nd in the B 1500m. Their immense team contribution extended to the throws where 3rd/4th places garnered crucial points.

Male 40s

In the 800m Rhondda’s Sean Price was too strong, but Brett Davis and Malcolm Medhurst came 2nd and 1st in the A and B race respectively. Keith Powell was second in the 200m. This is ‘long-distance’ for Keith but his time of 26.5 now makes him Newport’s top Veteran for this event ahead of the injured Steve Berney. Paul Young scored his first points of the season with 2nd place in the B 200m. Neath’s Phil Crane led a quality field in the 1500m, where Darryn McAtee lost out in the sprint finish to come 4th. Steve Wadley excelled in the field events, winning both the discus and javelin B throws, while Keith Powell picked up good points in the javelin, pole vault and triple jump. Dino Lantzos resumed his rivalry with Rhondda’s Glyn Pugh, with Glyn the victor this time in the A discus.

Medley Relay (2x200, 2x400)

We expected pressure from Rhondda in this race, but Keith Powell established a lead on leg 1 before John Watkins blasted away the opposition on leg 2. Darryn and Brett held form on the 400m legs for a comfortable victory, extending our relay success to 6 wins in a row.

Ladies

Ann Saxena recorded a win in both the 800m and 1500m, running two Season’s Bests as well. Lolita Byfield Moore, in her first track season, is making a big impression. She was 2nd in the 200m behind Cardiff’s Sue Hooper, but Lolita is really focussed and Sue is an ideal target for further improvement. This season Newport Ladies are competing strongly and have an outside chance of the league title if they can get three athletes out for the next two meetings.

Our newest member John Townsend completed the Newport team. John was our track & field official, and where would we be without them.
