South Wales Masters League Cardiff May 16th

Newport were off to a good start in the first league meeting of the season, this was despite a lot of apprehension amoungst the team due to the number of key absentees through injury and retirements.

We need not have worried as Newport proved yet again to be too strong for the opposition, and despite a couple of mix ups in the results that cost us a few points, we still won by an impressive 83 points.

In the 100m there was confusion as to who took part and Newport missed out as did Brecon, Mr Sutton was on his usual scintillating form winning in a comfortable 12.7. In the B race, John just managed to edge Geoff for the win and claimed the points, John was quoted afterwards to have said 'Why am I doing this?'

Malcolm on his way back from injury was as satisfied as he ever is with his 400m, especially as Craig Russell guested ahead of him in 56.9 In the B race Gavin had a tough race against the Swansea athlete and was just shaded out on the line. In the over 50's Geoff was having a busy time of things  taking an excellent 2nd place in 66.8.

The 800m races were keenly fought affairs, with Brett taking 2nd behind Sean Price of Rhondda and Darryn winning the B string. Not sure what happened to the time for the Over 50's but John was a good 2nd behind Rhondda's Bilal Namani and Dave did stirling work to win the B string race. Sadly Dave was left out of the 3000m results although we were able to work out his placing from his own time keeping. Chris Oxley guested to credible 9:41.7 to win the overall race with Neil Hardee returning to the track for is first master's league appearance finishing 2nd in the Over 35's race. Darryn was midfield taking 2nd in the B string.

In the field events Geoff Miller was putting himself about again, winning the Long Jump, Shot and High Jump, and taking 3rd in the Hammer. He was excused relay duties. Keith  was struggling with form a bit, but still took 2nd in the long jump and 3rd in the high jump before a decent relay leg. Glyn Was also notching up a win in the B long jump along with some decent performances in the Shot and Hammer before anchoring the relay home.

In the Ladies competition, only Lolita turned up so we were right out of contention on the night. Lolita ran well in the 100m clocking an easy win behind a couple of guest runners, but Rhondda had too many girls out on the night and won easily.
