Welsh Senior League Brecon 11th August 2007

Newport Harriers use of “youth and experience” paid dividends in Brecon last weekend. Although unfortunately relegated from Div 1 of the Welsh league Newport decided to go out with a bang. Joe Smith making his senior league debut ran two superb sprints in the 100 and 200m before anchoring the 4x100m sprint relay squad.

Performances of the day from Newport had to be the ladies hammer competition. Under 17 Kirstie Milne once again showed why she is one of the top hammer prospects in the country. Kirstie who has just turned 16, is eagerly awaiting news of her G.C.S.E. results, if they are as good as her hammer throwing she has a very bright future indeed. With a throw of 31.40m Kirstie set a new Harriers Under 17 women’s Hammer Record and has cemented herself in the Regional if not the National Hammer squad. Her throwing partner Lucy Bath not to be outdone threw 28.73m to set a new P.B. If this mark is not beaten my other Welsh athletes Lucy could very well find herself in the Regional Hammer Squad.

Sadly the team finished last by a single point, having been tripped up by the lack of officials again. The final league placing are yet to be released but we will be relegated to Division 2 next year whatever.
