Newport Harriers |
Newport were easy winners in match 3 of the Welsh Masters League with Rhondda providing the main opposition following the decline of Swansea after their promising emergence over the previous two seasons.
Neil Hardee and Darryn McAtee kick-started the team victory with A and B wins in the M40 3000m. Other track wins came from Darryn (B 400m), Keith Powell (200m) and Gavin Belcher (B 200m).
Best race of the night came in the 1000m where Neath’s Phil Crane won, just failing to hunt down Newport’s guest pace-setter Lee Richards. Brett Davis was 2nd with Malcolm Medhurst 1st in the B race.
Keith Powell picked up two 1st places and a 2nd in the field but was thwarted in his effort to make up Victor Ludorum points on the absent Derek Osborne of Brecon when the high jump was cancelled due to bad weather. Rob Eales gained an excellent 1st in the B javelin which is his weakest throwing event.
Geoff Miller was outstanding in the M50 category. Tonight was a fitness test for him ahead of the Masters Inter-regional match and he gained victory in the triple jump and javelin, 2nd in the 200m and 400m, and 3rd in the hammer.
Dave Proffitt provided valuable points on the track in the 400m, 1000m and 3000m, while Colin Bradley covered four events as our B string competitor recording three 2nd places and a 3rd.
Unbeaten in relays since August 2003, the run continued tonight with Malcolm, Darryn, Brett and Gavin breaking the 4-minute barrier and setting a club Masters record.
Pre-Vet Kirsten Waring had a taste of things to come when she guested in the 200m and 400m. In three years time she will be winning the women’s league single-handedly (with a little help from Sharon Fletcher and Rhian Loudon).
It was a well run meeting with a good turnout by Newport officials.
As ever the official results bear only a passing resemblance to the facts. Neil and Darryn’s performance in the 3000m have completely disappeared, Darryn’s score in the 400m has been omitted, while Brian Webb and Sue Hooper have suddenly become Rhondda athletes as did our own Geoff Miller in the 400m.
