Newport Harriers Welsh Cross Country Championships

Leckwith Stadium Cardiff played host to the 2005 Welsh National Cross Country Championships. Six young hopefuls from Newport most under the coaching of Jeff Hodges, Liz Brimble and Jane Phillips took on their peers from around Wales.

In the under 13 boys race Dan MacKenzie took on a strong field of 31 finishing the 2400m course in 9 minutes 24 seconds to take 12th place. The Under 15 girls race saw two excellent middle distance prospects as Angharad Bishop and Bethany Cann took on the 27 strong field over the 4350m course. Bethany finished in 8th place in 18 minutes 31 seconds with Angharad right behind her in 9th place with a time of 18 minutes 42 seconds. Jonathan Morgan was our sole representative in the Under 15 boys race and contested the same 4350m course with another 25 boys. Jonathan managed a 20th placing in 17 minutes 11 seconds.

At under 17 level Ian Withers and Matthew Wreford battled the 5676m course with 20 others Ian getting the better of Matthew with 12th place in 20 minutes 52 seconds and Matthew 14th in 21 minutes 12 seconds. After these performances the coaching squad are well pleased with their athletes performances and look forward to a successful outdoor season starting in April..
