John Flook
It is with great
sadness that we have to inform you that Newport Harriers stalwart
John Flook has died aged 82.
He
came to the club in the early 50’s from the Navy as a 440/880 yard
athlete on the track and road/cross country runner. John epitomised
the traditional Harrier athlete, always turning out for the club and
the setting up of events.
He
then moved into coaching, where he was the first person a new
athlete would see at the club, before being passed on the most
appropriate coach. He managed at the club and for many years the
Welsh Cross Country team in its heyday in the early ‘80s.
He
was also a official: a starter/marksman who attended the popular
Cwmbran Open meetings, whilst supporting the clubs activities at its
Glebelands headquarters. The transition to the clubs new home at
Spytty coincided with his wife’s failing health, who he then devoted
his time to.
