Atlantic College 10K
Incorporating the Welsh 10K Championships
Splendid weather and a pleasant scenic course made this a race to
remember for the Newport Harriers quintet who made the trip to St Donats
Castle. The official description was a ‘fast, albeit undulating course’,
although our resident road running expert Dave Proffitt categorised it
as ‘hilly’, but whether it was fast or hilly our first three runners all
set PBs for the road 10K.
First Newport athlete to finish, and winner of the unofficial club
championship was Emrys Penny. He is only 15 and this was his 10K debut
but Emrys shows promise in every race and he set off fast to finish
43rd.
Further down the field Stuart Pearce (58th) and Darryn McAtee (66th) had
a private race. Stuart opened an early gap but Darryn pulled level at
the 5K mark. Darryn tracked his club rival stride for stride over the
next 3K before Stuart eased away when they hit the inclines in the final
race section.
Malcolm Medhurst started briskly but then suffered with his quads which
enabled 33-minute man (once upon a time) Dave Proffitt (120th) to claim
a rare victory over club mate Malcolm (123rd).
