Newport Harriers 2011 Club Championships Round-Up

Our new-look Club Championships took place over two days on 7th and 12th April. After a gap of one year we revived our championships as straightforward events rather than adopt a decathlon-style scoring system. We also invited Cwmbran Harriers to take part to spice up the competition.

U11 Boys – Williams-Marr and Coppen scoop a bagful of titles

The U11s entered the fray with bags of enthusiasm over a range of events, with many having their first ever taste of competitive athletics. Among the boys Daeshaun Webbe, Keanu Williams-Marr and Joseph Thomas emerged as our top sprinters while 8-year-old Jensen Coppen impressed over the half-mile race. Keanu and Jensen were also successful in the field – Keanu winning shot and javelin while Jensen won long jump.

U11 Girls – brace of titles for Waddon and Arnold

The U11 Girls dead-heated with the boys for energy and commitment. Ffion Waddon was our top 75m/150m sprinter. There was a lot of quality on display in the 800m with Ella Critchley striding away from Lily Ivin and Jessica Taylor. Caitlin Arnold was our top thrower in the shot and javelin while Mia Davies smashed the 3-metre mark in the long jump.

U13 Girls – sprint double for Reynolds

Amelia Reynolds asserted her sprint calibre against the best of Cwmbran with victories in the 100m and 200m. Aimee Wallace demonstrated that she is a heptathlete in the making with wining performances in the high jump, hurdles, long jump and javelin. Meanwhile Emily Gill showed strength and confidence to debut in the 800m and 1500m when pitted against a group of older age-group girls.

U13 Boys – mixed fortunes for Daniel Snelling

Daniel Snelling is our budding little sprint star, taking the 200m and long jump, but a slip-up at the start of the 100m let in Ellis Wharton. Three-quarters of our road relay team were on show – Geraint Rawlinson enjoyed his competitive track debut, Carwyn Penny won 800m,1500m and javelin, while Jack Haines snuck in for a win in the shot.

U15 Boys – Alexander Snelling survives pressure from Jordan Bryant

Alexander Snelling came under pressure from Jordan Bryant but emerged with two wins in the shot and discus. Kyle Arnold showed his versatility with wins in the triple jump, hurdles and long jump, while Ryan Morgan out-sprinted his Cwmbran rivals in the 100m, 200m and 400m.

U15 Girls – triple success for Katie-Jane Priest

Even without starting blocks Katie-Jane Priest outdid the Cwmbran sprint team in the 100m and 200m to go with her 300m victory over Emma Hennessy and Bronwyn Satterly. Cheyenne Sinclair improved her middle-distance credentials with PBs in the 800m and 1500m.

U17/U20/Senior Women – Rackham continues to develop

Amy Rackham’s introduction to competitive athletics extended to the track when she took on the 200m, 800m and 1500m, and as the season progresses she may find herself to be a key member of our Midlands League middle-distance squad. Elsewhere Bethan Jackson, Bethan Hill-Howells, Melissa Arthur and Chloe Powell all gave early season indicators. Melissa threw well with her brand new javelin while Bethan Hill-Howells PB’d in the triple jump.

U17/U20/Senior Men – Curtis Goodger produces the goods

Curtis Goodger laid claim to being the star of the Club Championships with PBs in 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m. Still only U17 Curtis is now putting pressure on our established senior athletes for a place in the Midlands League team. Rob Eales showed encouraging early-season form by throwing near to his best in the discus. Ben McEwan and Tyrone Fowler seemed to pop up in most events but had the stage to themselves in the 110m hurdles, won by Ben though Tyrone’s debut in the event was encouraging.

Unsung heroes

There were far too many club helpers to mention, but they all worked tirelessly to make the Club Championships a resounding success. Cwmbran Harriers thanked us for the invitation and commended us for our organisation. They brought a strong squad with notable performances coming from U11 athletes Ewan Rosser and Gabbie Fakande.
