Newport fall through the trap door
On the eve of the final match illness and injury ripped through the Newport team to deny us a reasonable chance of Division 5 survival, and our fate was sealed when we stepped onto the bus with seven key athletes missing. |

Senior Men - League debuts for Aviss, Jones and FowlerEager to get in on the Midlands League action, our U17 debutants all acquitted themselves well. Tom Aviss was 10cm off grabbing the A spot from Rob Eales as he gained an excellent 2nd place in the B discus. Lewis Jones was 3rd in the B shot as he competed for the first time with the senior weight implement. Tyrone Fowler ran a PB in the 3000 metres. Dave Goodger, Keith Powell and Lloyd Clark all crashed into their final barrier in the hurdles but each had the strength to stay on their feet for a good finish. Darryn McAtee and Stuart Pearce both recorded PBs in the 3000m steeplechase. Our two individual winners on the day were Rob Eales in the shot putt and Carl McEwan in the B pole vault. Our senior men then signed off with an emphatic victory in the 4 x 400 relay that shaved 7/10ths off the Midlands League Division 5 record. Senior Women – ever-present effort from Plow and BoswellEmma Plow and Lisa Boswell were our two female athletes who competed in all four matches this season. Lisa marked the occasion with two victories (hammer, B shot) and a new Division 5 record in the hammer. Emma had a busy afternoon, stepping up to A string duties in the 100 and 200 metres, then later doubling up in both relays. Kathryn Davies produced her usual assertive running style to hold on for 2nd place in the 800 metres, and also recorded wins in the shot and B javelin. Lauren O’Reilly picked up points in the hurdles, jumps and relays, and Kirstie Milne also turned multi-eventer for the day, competing in the hammer (B 1st), 100 metres and anchor leg in the 4 x 100 relay. Newport Officials – maximum pointsMaximum points once again from our officials, courtesy of Ian Morgan, Chris Boswell, Colin Bradley, Tony Backhouse. Mark Boswell and Terry Fowler. How many more trap doors? So that’s relegation two seasons in a row for Newport. At this rate
it won’t be long before we can all compete Higher Claim for Lliswerry
Runners. Last minute withdrawals cost us dear. The team sheet on Friday
would have made us second and relegated Stratford. The team on Sunday
did its best but lacked enough quality and quantity. Division 6 won’t be
a pushover but, surely, we will stop the slide and maybe bounce back to
Division 5 hungrier and wiser. |
