Welsh Championships

Welsh Under 13, Under 15 and Senior Championships 2008

The sun shone brilliantly over Swansea Bay as a number of Newport Harriers’ Athletes produced equally stunning performances in the Welsh Track and Field Championships on the weekend. Newport took 5th place in the medal table 8 places higher than local rivals Cwmbran with 5 gold, 6 silver and 5 bronze medals. Cwmbran had only one gold medallist on the weekend.

The most exciting race of the weekend was the under 15 boy’s 1500 metres which Elliott Hardee led from the gun to win by exactly 1 tenth of a second from team mate Dan Chesworth. The two boy’s were locked together for most of the race before Hardee’s strength took him clear in the last few metres.

Equally as exciting was the under 15 boy’s long jump with Michael Payne added almost half a metre to his personal best, jumping 5 metres 73 centimetres to pip team mate James Morgan by only 1 centimetre. Payne later took second place in the 400 metres.

In contrast Rhianne Jones had things pretty much her own way as she stormed to a victory by a margin of 1.5 seconds in the senior women’s 400 metres, recording a personal best time of 56.81 seconds. James Nasrat had a tougher job in the men’s 400 metres winning in a time of 48.59 only 4 hundredths of a second ahead of second placed runner Tom Miller from Cardiff.

Bethan Hill-Howells extended her lead at the top of the Welsh Rankings in the under 13 girl’s high jump clearing 1 metre 37 centimetres to win the event.

Melissa Arthur had been struggling for form in the weeks coming into the championships, but everything clicked into place on the weekend as she improved her personal best in taking silver in the under 15 girl’s javelin. Jade Guy in only her 5th meeting in a Harriers vest took silver in the under 13 girl’s javelin.

In the under 20 Mens 5 kilometre race Nathan Hardee, who has ambitions to take his father’s club record for the event won a silver medal and Aimee Clark competing for Cwmcarn school was narrowly beaten into second place in the under 13 girl’s shot.

Bronze medals came from Jacob Matthews in the senior men’s shot and discus, Tom Kivell in the senior men’s triple jump, Oliver Hudson in the under 13 boy’s long jump, Craig Russell in the senior men’s 400 metre hurdles and the under 13 boy’s 4*100 metre relay.

Congratulations too to former Newport Harrier Lara Richards on her victory in the Senior Women’s Long Jump Final with a leap of 5m 80 cm.
