Round 1 Swansea 20th April 2008

Sadly the turnout was a bit disappointing for us in the first round match, it might have been down to the poor weather at home, but those who did turn out were rewarded with a great day's competition in the early spring sun. A number of League and Age Group records were broken on the day and there were some sparkling individual performances, from the Harriers that did attend.

Starting with the Under 13 boys, Liam Bradley turned in a very gutsy run in the 1500m which was run in very windy conditions, pulling back a deficit at the halfway point to take the Eastern match by some distance. Rhys Norris showed he had a strong finish to win the 800m from the challenge of the Cwmbran athlete. Oliver Hudson had  a busy day covering both sprints as well as winning the Long Jump with an excellent 4.20m and then anchoring home the 4x100m relay. At under 15 the pick of the performances was had to be James Morgan's long jump of 5.15m following his excellent 12.1 100m time, and his 200m wasn't bad either.

Melissa Arthur broke her PB winning the Under 15 girls javelin with 25.11m (2nd longest in Wales at this time) in the very windy conditions. In the Under 17 girls Sian Jordan thought she'd thrown a PB in the Discus only to find the officials had transcribe the distance backwards, but she still won the event. It left the win a little hollow, but I'm sure it's only a matter of time before Sian throws 28m. Bethan Hill-Howells was the only Under 13 girl, but she still flew the flag high in her chosen event, taking an easy win in the high jump.

It was good to see Tom Kivell back jumping after ending last season in an ambulance. Tom showed he was almost back to his best in the long and triple jump with two wins far ahead of his nearest rivals. It seems that Tom is the name of the moment, Tom Morgan had a blinding days entertainment starting with winning the long jump with 5.93m. Tom then went on to win the javelin with "only" 42.46m, good to see he's setting the standard high for himself. Tom just missed the hat trick taking 2nd in the high jump after narrowly missing 1.70m.

The overall team position was quietly surprising, 3rd place behind the big Cardiff and Cwmbran sides can't be complained about as we were so down on numbers.
