Round 2 Carmarthen 24th May 2008

The forecast on the bank holiday Monday could not have been much worse, so it was no surprise that the turnout was poor again. Several had decided to skip the meeting on the Saturday to concentrate on this meeting but they never made it. For those who braved the 60 mile per hour gales and the horizontal rain and the arctic temperatures, there was little cheer to take home. The only bright point was the roaring trade Carmarthen Harriers did in hot soup. Several people came prepared with all weather tents and umbrellas but the wind soon ripped them up and strew them across Pembrokeshire. Consequently the Hurdles races and some of the Pole Vault and High Jump events had to be cancelled due to safety concerns, One or two High jumps and Pole Vaults did manage to fit itself into a brief lull early on, more by luck than judgement.

The real star of the day was little Bethan Hill-Howells, who managed to win bother of her events with two decent performances, despite the fact that both were held into the wind. Jade Guy, also an under 13 girls, won both of her throws as well, although her javelin benefitted from the following hurricane.

Oliver Edwards was able to put in two good times in the sprints, just missing out on the double, but I'm surprised he could see though his glasses to sprint that well.

Newport's other winners were Tom Kivell who found being tall was no longer an advantage into a head wind in the Long Jump, and the Arnold brothers Kyle and Matt, in the 100m and Hammer respectively. Sian Jordan managed to overcome the high winds winning her discus event with an acceptable distance showing a good technique can work well.

This has left it all to play form in the 3rd round with a 3 way tie for 3rd place between Newport, Brecon and Barry & Vale, with just a few matchpoints separating the clubs.
