Cup Final 24th August 2008

Newport Harriers juniors found the cup final a real challenge on what was a cool Sunday in Brecon. Sadly, being mid August, we were quite badly hit with athletes being unavailable due to holidays, but those who were able to compete did very well.

In the under 13 boys, Kyle Arnold proved his value as a multi eventer covering the long and high jumps as well as the hurdles, whilst Jack Fear recorded their best results with 2nd in the B javelin and 4th in the 800m.  The Under 13 girls had a bit more of a tough day with newbie Katie Priest and Katie Hunt pairing up for the afternoon and carrying the bulk of the points.

Mike Payne had a busy day, covering the sprints and long jump, but this did not stop him recording two wins and a 2nd against some of the best Wales has to offer in the under 15 boys age group. The girls were a bit more stretched and only Megan Coe managed a win in the javelin, sadly Melissa was injured in the competition and had to withdraw but not before finishing 2nd.

At under 17's we had our best competitions, the boys were in fact 4th in their age group, with some excellent performances once again from Ashley Jones and Tomos Morgan in the field, both achieving wins in the A & B high and long jumps and Tom taking 2nd in the javelin. They were amply backed out by Tom Aviss, Lewis Jones and Tom Kendal on the field and Lamarl Freckleton in the sprints. Just needed a couple of middle distance runners and we could have won that group. The girls did almost as well, Antonia Yorkshire managed a win in the 300m hurdles having covered the sprint hurdles and 300m. In the field Naomi Wadley-Williams also had a good day with 2nd place in he r favourite event the javelin having already covered the shot. Sian Jordan also placed well in the Discus (2nd) and took a surprise 3rd in the shot. Shaleena Graham found the sprints a bit hot for her and was unable to improve in her long jump despite being consistently on the board.

In the under 20's, the boys turned in a good performance as well, Tom Kivell won the long jump quite easily and took a decent 2nd in the triple. Alongside him in the field, Jacob Matthews took a brace of 2nd places in the show and discus to add to Mark Boswell's win in the B shot and two decent throws in the hammer and a surprise 4th in the javelin. With the only other team member Ashley Price in the 100m there wasn't enough for a relay, as was the case in all of the age groups which hurt us points wise.
