Newport Harriers |
It was another sunny day for the Juniors in their last round of the Junior League as they made a bid for cup final glory. On a day when 38 league records fell, Newport booked their place in the Welsh Junior Cup final just behind rivals Cardiff. Starting with the Under 11's Caitlin Scarfi led with way a double win in the 75 and 150 also with a 3rd in the shot. Katie Shine also provided excellent support who took 4th, 3rd and 5th in the same events. The boys did even better with Daniel Snelling breaking the League record in both the 75m and the 150m, Daniel also went on to take second in the Long Jump behind Carwyn Penny. Carwyn picked up a trio of wins in the 800m, Long Jump and the Javelin, and amazingly broke the league record in each of these 3 diverse events. Alex Cisuelo was just behind the lads with three 2nd places in the two sprints and the Javelin before they went on to win the relay in convincing style with Jack Hines completing the team. Under 13's found the going a bit tougher. Rhys Norris was one form in the 1500m producing a dominant piece of running to take the win way ahead of second place. Kyle Arnold was also on his game equalling his own league record winning the high jump, but he missed his club record over the hurdles by a couple of hundredths. Stevan Russell was just shy of his league record when he won the discus and managed decent clearance in the high jump behind Kyle. Stevan and Jordan Bryan were unlucky in the Discus when they both beat the exiting record only to be bettered by team mate Jamie Bryant who finished up winner. The boys were unlucky not to win the relay. The girls were lead by Katie-Jane Priest, who continues to dominate the sprints with two clear wins as nobody got near her again. Emma Hennessy was also having a busy day, Emma had a real tussle in the 800 before coming away from the field in the last 150 to take the win. At the end of the day, their relay was uncatchable and were easy winners. So to the Under 15s, the team might be small but they certainly made their presence felt, the girls in particular. Hannah Griffiths was streets ahead in both the 200 and the 300m races, though she had to find her trademark home straight kick to win the 200. Beth Hill-Howells, fresh back from holidays showed no loss of form in the high jump, narrowly missing a new PB in second. Melissa Arthur must be getting tired of seeing Emma Cooke as she finished second to her in the shot and discus, breaking her PB in the latter. Melissa did win the Javelin with a new PB, club and league record having seeing Emma do the same to beat her. Curtis Goodger was the most successful of the boys with a comprehensive win in the 1500m, Jack Fear was close on Curtis's heals in 3rd place. Overall the team placed second again, this time behind Hereford, but they had the pleasure of beating close rivals Cardiff. |
