The 2011 European Masters Indoor Championships

Gent 16-20th March

The championships were pretty well organised for the European Masters judging by previous years reports, and there were only a few issues throughout the championships themselves. The British team contained a small but highly successful contingent from Wales, which included two from Newport Harriers: Glyn Sutton and Keith Powell. The Welsh competitors, of about 6 athletes, brought back several medals including 3 golds, 3 silvers and a bronze.

From a Newport point of view, the star performer was Glyn Sutton. Glyn took the silver in the 200, just being run out of the gold medal position in the last 30m by the German, but then he went on to take the Gold in the 60m sprint despite running with a slight pull in his hamstring.

Keith didn't fair too well in the pentathlon getting disqualified in the hurdles and losing 650 points to finish 27th from 32 when he could have been 18th. Keith managed a PB in the long jump (5.29m) and another in the shot (8.53m) following this, then a good high jump of 1.45m and finally the 1000m in 3:54.80.  His 60m individual was a decent enough run but not enough to make the semi finals.
