Masters Best Performances

Newport Harriers Masters Records Go Online

After months of painstaking research Newport Harriers presents its club ‘Masters Records’ for athletes aged 35 and over.

Technically we’re going to call them Best Performances, as we can’t ratify that some 50-year-old Newport Harrier didn’t run an outstanding time back in 1963. Also we’re going to call them Age Group Best Performances to get over the fact that 35 year old males didn’t become Masters until quite recently.

Nonetheless they are a recognition of achievement by our best athletes and feature two Olympians, a former World Best Marathon runner, a competitor at the 1997 World Championships, several Commonwealth Games athletes, a former World Masters champion, and a flying doctor. It’s also a trip down memory lane with some old familiar names to conjure such as Sally Blake and stalwart Paddy Wallace.

These records are also an incentive to keep going. Masters athletics on the scale we now see it is a relatively recent phenomenon, so our club records contain several gaps just waiting to be filled.

Many thanks to Ivor Adams for his diligent work over the past thirty years recording and archiving our athlete performances, which has made these club records comprehensive and meaningful.
